Airbrushing
Gaahleri GHAD-39 2-in-1

This airbrush has no right to be this good at this price point. It is an absolute workhorse with features that are normally included in airbrushes that cost four times as much. You get a large needle that is great for priming and basecoats, and then a smaller fine detail needle for when you need precision. The simplified design makes it easy to clean, and the adjustable backstop makes it easy to avoid overspray. My personal best pick for anyone looking to start airbrushing without breaking the bank.
Harder & Steenbeck Infinity 2024 CRplus

Made famous with tabletop hobbyist through partnerships with renowned artists like Angel Giraldez, the Infinity CRplus is widely considered the king of small detail airbrushes. I received one as a wedding gift in early 2025, and it has been an absolute joy to use. While I would only recommend this to experienced airbrushers (its pricey), it gets the JTS stamp of approval.
Airbrush Cleaning Kit

All of the tools you need to keep your airbrush clean in one handy package! Comes with a nozzle scraper, pipe cleaners, brushes, and a spray cup so that your cleaner of choice doesn’t end up in your lungs.
Medea Airbrush Cleaner

The first airbrush cleaner I ever used, and I have never had a reason to switch. It works, its cheap, and its from Iwata. Enough said. This will meet all of your acrylic cleaning needs. For heavy duty jobs, you can soak your small bits in a glass cup overnight before scraping them clean. Pro-tip, you can also use this to clean your paint brushes!
Note: This will not clean enamel/oil paints. You will need mineral spirits for that.
Silicone Resin Measuring Cups

Why am I mentioning resin stuff in the airbrushing section? Because those little tiny cups are perfect for thinning your paints before you pour them into your airbrush. You should never mix paint directly in your airbrush. This gives you a convenient way to mix properly that is easy to pour and clean. It also happens to be great if you mix resins for recasting/3d printing.
Brushes and Brush Care
ARTIFY Drybrush Set

Artis Opus has done a lot for the hobby and has revolutionized the way we all drybrush our minis. If you like his style, but can’t afford his brushes, this is the set for you. Just like his set, you get multiple sizes of brushes, a dampening pad, and soap for cleaning…just at a fraction of the cost.
AIT Art Select Mini-Liner Detail Paint Brushes

Most hobby companies don’t offer the full breadth of brush types that are available to traditional artists, and liner brushes are probably the one that would elevate your painting to the next level. The bristles on the size 2 are 3/4″, give you a large belly to hold tons of paint, while giving you a sharp tip for ultimate control. As the name suggests, these are great for painting lines, so that translates into edge highlighting, freehanding, and texturing techniques for us hobbyists. They are also perfect for hitting those hard to reach details that round brushes struggle with.
AIT Art Premium Detail Brush Set

If you are looking at breaking into natural hair brushes without breaking the bank on Windsor & Newton, give these a look. These are excellent quality brushes. Keep them clean and they will keep you happy.
Paint Puck Ultimate Rinse Cup

It may have a description that could be mistaken for an adult toy, but this thing is a game changer. The nubs help agitate your bristles to get paint out of them, the sockets hang your brushes in the optimal position for drying, and the base doubles as a pallet.
The Masters Brush Cleaner & Preserver

Newer painters are always surprised when they find out about brush soap. Just think about it; what would you do if I poured paint in your hair. You would hop in the shower and wash your hair with soap. So get some soap for your paint brushes. This gets all of the gunk out of your brush and conditions the hair (for natural brushes) so that they last longer. Once cleaned, you can leave some of the soap on the bristles, reform your shape, and let it dry in that position to keep your brushes pointy!
RedGrass Games Everlasting Wet Palette

I have been painting miniatures since 2000. I resisted getting a wet palette until like 2018. I was dumb; learn from my mistakes. When working with acrylics, this will keep your paint fresh for longer and make thinning way easier (the paint isn’t trying to dry while you are thinning). The RedGrass version improves on the traditional time-tested design by including a sealed gasket in the lid to keep things moist between sessions and their foam pads are a huge improvement over the traditional sponges that come in kits in the same price range.
Artists’ Grade Gamsol

Working with enamel and oil paints? Then you need mineral spirits to thin your paints and clean your brushes. While some hobby companies like AK and Ammo have mineral spirits available, fine art supply companies will typically offer you a better deal. Gamsol will save you money and works perfect.
Acrylic Paint
I have been painting miniatures for over 25 years…suffice to say, I have a lot of paint. I started with Citadel back in 2000, and I have tried most of the hobby brands that were available from then up until now. While there is usually something valuable in every range, here is what I am reaching for the most in my current projects:
- ProAcryl by Monument Hobbies – https://monumenthobbies.com/collections/pro-acryl-paints-paint-sets
- Atom by Ammo – https://www.migjimenez.com/en/619-atom-paints
- Ionic by Ammo – https://www.migjimenez.com/en/671-ionic
- Speedpaint 2.0 by Army Painter – https://thearmypainter.com/collections/speedpaint
- Deep Shades by AK Interactive – https://ak-interactive.com/product-category/paints/paints-acrylics/deep-shades/
Enamel and Oil Paints
While I haven’t been working with oils and enamels quite as long as acrylics, I have been doing it long enough to have been around the block (I started in 2016). Here is a list of my favorite lines:
- Windsor & Netwon Artists’ Oil – here
- Oilbrushers by Ammo – https://www.migjimenez.com/en/289-oilbrusher
- Liquid Pigment by AK Interactive – https://ak-interactive.com/product-category/paints/liquid-pigments/
- Wargame Washes by AK Interactive – https://ak-interactive.com/product/full-range-wargame-washes-14-units/
- Villany Ink by Grimdark Compendium – https://grimdarkcompendium.com/product-category/villainy-ink/
- Note: Villany Ink is specifically formulated for “grimdark” painting, and may not be to everyone’s taste. They are meant for highly specific use cases; read the documentation on the web site and watch some tutorials before making a decision!
