Alright! Today we are going to talk about the units that dropped in the wave 3 release for the Sorcerer Kings, take a look at the kits, and even show off some painted examples!

All three of these kits were sorely needed, and really help to round out the factions’ options. The Dhanur Disciples add a ranged regiment where we can safely hide our vulnerable casters away from the front lines, the Mahut adds a versatile front line monster with a lot of DPS potential, and the Favored of Hormus upgrade kit allows us to put a caster on the front lines in the mid game that won’t just melt under pressure.

Dhanur Disciples

First up, lets take a look at the sprue layout:

These are some of the most dynamically posed archers I have seen on the market. You get four bodies per sprue, two kneeling posing and two standing poses that make ranking them up a breeze. As with most rank and file miniatures, there isn’t any easy way to create custom poses, but you do get an abundance of different head options (male and female) to help your miniatures not all feel the same.

Painting the kit was a breeze as the textures on the miniatures make using the “Slap Chop” method a no brainer. If you are interested in seeing how I painted this miniature, you can check out the video below!

Mahut

The Mahut is a monster of a kit (pun intended), but is very cleverly designed so that the connection points of the parts are usually in the natural recesses of the finished miniature.

There are a few connections that leave visible seams like the rear of the hind legs, but those can be gently sanded away and hidden with a little plastic glue easily enough. I should also mention that the kit actually includes two head options and a sprue of four Dhanur Disciples to ride in the howdah. The top platform of the howdah can be left off to facilitate easy airbrushing if desired, but I painted the model fully assembled.

I went with a grayish-blue granite look instead of the clean white of the box art. The box art reminded me of porcelain, and didn’t leave a lot of room for interesting shading or texture. My method allowed for lots of random texture to add visual interest, as well as a wide color pallet including grays, blues, browns, and black.

Favored of Hormus

The Favored of Hormus is a resin character upgrade for the Mahut kit. It is intended to replace the four Dhanur Disciples that ride in the howdah.

The cast was very clean with minimal flashing, and quite simple to put together. Consisting of only four parts, assembly was quick and painless. Remember to use super glue on your resin minis!

I do recommend attaching the model to a painting handle to paint it separately from the Mahut. For me, I attached a small square flex magnet to the bottom (my painting handle has a steel top), which was easily removed during the final assembly steps.

Well, that’s pretty much it for today’s post. I can’t wait to get a game in with my new additions to the Sorcerer Kings and see how they perform on the field.
