For my first article, I thought it might be fun to do a little “get to know me” post. If you prefer a video of this content, you can check this out:

The best place to start this little bit of introspection is with my MBTI (Meyers Briggs) personality type; INTJ. In case you are unfamiliar with the MBTI Personality Test, it is a pseudo-scientific test that measures your personality traits across five spectrums to slot you into one of sixteen personality types. Armed with this information, you can then access information about why you do the things you do, and how you best relate to people of other personality types.

The 16 Personality Types

As mentioned above, the questionnaire measures you on five spectrums to arrive at one of these personality types. Lets examine my results from a recent evaluation:

Great, so what does this have to do with Warhammer and wargaming? Well, lets break it all down!

The “I” in INTJ

Wargames such as Warhammer are a pretty social hobby. After all, you need an opponent to play the game. Most people don’t have enough space in their homes for dedicated gaming space, so you normally have to go outside and “touch grass” to play in a public space. But, as a paragon of introversion (100% no less), I derive my “mental energy” from being alone!

Well, introverts are commonly misunderstood as being anti-social shut-ins. While some of us fit that stereotype, most introverts are perfectly capable of being social; it just drains our mental batteries. With that said, we tend to derive more enjoyment from the non-social aspects of the hobby, such as painting and list building, more than being in a crowded venue for hours at a time. When I do schedule a game, I try to schedule it early in the morning before my FLGS gets crowded!

The “N” in INTJ

The “N” in INTJ stands for intuitive (because “I” was already taken). Intuitive people are open minded and imaginative. Gaming universes with rich and deep lore like Warhammer are very exciting for intuitive people! I ravenously read all I can about my favorite games, and have spent countless hours theory-crafting in my head about Warhammer lore. I even predicted the return of Lion El’ Jonson way back in 5th edition (the signs were there).

Corax never left, he was here the whole time

The “T” in INTJ

Ooph, 100% thinking. I stay in my head…a lot. In the middle of a game, I am constantly planning at least two turns ahead and revising said plan every time something changes on the battlefield. I am essentially the armchair general equivalent of Roboute Guilliman.

This means I can play a little slower than other people. Due to this, tournaments and timed game modes (looking at you Warmachine…) are the bane of my existence. I try to rein in my constant overthinking as much as possible to make sure my opponent has a great game, but that is definitely a practiced skill.

These are evil. They should not exist. Fight me.

The “J” in INTJ

This spectrum is interesting in that I can flip from judging to prospecting on any given day (this means that sometimes I exhibit INTP traits). Judging people tend to like structure and rigidity while prospecting people are perfectly okay forging their own path into the unknown. I fall somewhere in the middle.

My judging proclivities express themselves in a need for a tidy gaming environment. Dice trays are a must, and I routinely 3D print organizational accessories for the games I play. I even designed a few myself, which you can find here on Cults3D.

My prospecting traits are expressed in my love of finding new games. I started my wargaming journey in 2000 with Warhammer 40K 3rd edition. Since then, I have expanded my collection into dozens of games including Warmachine, Infinity, Heavy Gear, Battletech, Malifaux, Bushido, and Dropzone Commander…and I hope to share them all with you over time, from the comfort of my home (and occasionally at my FLGS).

So What Kind of Wargamer are You?

If you are now curious about your own MBTI type and exploring how you enjoy this mammoth hobby, you can take an abbreviated version of the Meyers Briggs questionnaire at https://www.16personalities.com/. Once you find out your personality type, they have lots of great resources to explain your results.
